Orkut is a Social network which makes it possible to connect the friends of its friends. It is a service of Google launched the January 22nd 2004.

In the beginning, an invitation of a member was necessary to be registered on Orkut. Henceforth, it is possible to make use of Orkut without being invited by a member. A pooling of its Google account (accessible on invitation) is possible, moreover Google tends to create bridges between Orkut and its other services, like GMail and Google Talk. The statistics are updated daily.

Less known than its competitor Facebook, Google announces 50 million users including one strong proportion with the Brésil (26,5 million is 53,5  % of the whole of the users), followed the United States and Iran. Less 10  % of the users of Orkut come from other countries (December 2006).

Polemic

The Brazilian site is the subject of a polemic, certain pages attacking the human rights. According to Safernet, organization of monitoring of Internet 94% of the 45.000 Brazilian pages of Internet incentive to racism, the homophobie or the pedophilia are lodged by Orkut.
