Orkneyinga saga

The Saga of the Orkneys ( Orkneyinga saga , also called History of the Tales of the Orkneys ) is a single historical document on the the Orkneys, since their colonization by the Norwegian at the ninth century, up to approximately 1200.

The saga was written around the year 1200, by an unknown Icelandic author. Like the others sagas, this text is at the same time fictional and historical. It is thought that it is resulting from a compilation many other sources, combining oral legends and historical facts.

The saga starts with the account of the semi-legendary conquest of the Orkneys by the King of Norway, before evolving to more factual elements.

Several semi-legendary characters are also introduced during the account: Sigurd Powerful the, Hakon Paulsson, Sigurd the Fort, Ragnvald Eysteinsson, Magnus Erlendsson. These characters still form part currently of the folklore of the Orkneys.
