Orion Pictures Corporation was an American production company of cinema. Orion Pictures was created in 1978 in the form of a Joint venture between Warner Bros. Pictures and three leader former executives of United Artists. Arthur Krim, Robert Benjamin and Eric Pleskow had left UA following the financial failure of the Door of the paradise ( Heaven' S Gate ) Michael Cimino.
Among first films produced by Orion, one can quote Time After Time , Caddyshack , Sharkey' S Machine and has Little Romance .
In 1982, Orion amalgamates with Filmways, Inc.. Filmways was a production company which had known its hour of glory in the years 1960 with televised series like The Beverly Hillbillies , Green Acres , Mister ED or The Addams Family and which was the head office of American International Pictures. The same year, Orion becomes a company independent and present sound new logo: an animation of the Constellation of Orion.
In the years 1980, Orion produces films with large spectacle like Terminator or Robocop , but also films of Woody Allen, Amadeus of Milos Forman, Platoon of Oliver Stone, Danse with the wolves of Kevin Costner and the Silence of the lambs ( The Silence off the Lambs ) of Jonathan Demme.
In 1986, the billionaire John Kluge invests in the company. He becomes the principal shareholder about it, via his company Metromedia, in 1988.
With the beginning of the year 1990, Orion encounters serious difficulties financial and is put under the protection of the law on the Banqueroute S. Orion manages to leave the bankruptcy 1996. In 1998, Mertromedia resells Orion, as well as the Samuel Goldwyn Company and the Motion Picture Corporation off America, with MGM.
Today, Orion is nothing any more but one trade mark of MGM. The catalog of period 1978-1982 of Orion is always held by Warner Bros.
