The Oric Atmos is a computer of the company Oric. It is the modified version and déboguée of Oric-1.

History

Left in 1984, Atmos is a débogué Oric-1 (the mother charts are identical between the two machines, with as only difference the ROMANIAN which carries the number of version 1.1).

The case was changed, and old the keyboard of Oric-1 was replaced by a keyboard semi-mechanics (the keys always press on the same membrane as on Oric-1). The successive price drops contribute largely to its success in France (of 1200 F with 990 F).

Atmos was handicapped by a not very reliable loading of the cassettes.

Competitor disk drives will be proposed on sale, that is to say by Oric whose reader is called the microdisc (selling price in France: 3600 francs), is by company TRAN, of the Valette-of-VAr, whose model bears the name of Jasmine followed by the Jasmine II which with the characteristic to be able to reach the two faces of a diskette without turning over it; these diskettes were with the format 3" just like CPC6128 of Amstrad

June 1st 1985 Eureka (French company) repurchases Oric, keeps the name Oric International and will leave STRATOS IQ164 (prototype constructed at the base by the British) under the name Téléstrat • This Microphone was very awaited by the press and particularly promising. At this time, there is more than 120.000 Oric in France.

Lastly, in January 1986, additional proof that Atmos was diffused in other countries, a German firm of Düsseldorf, MSE, propose a reader of Disquette 5 ¼ " for this machine. TRAN, for its part, announces a chart intended to return Oric, equipped with the reader Jasmin, 100% compatible with the IBM PC! Here are which, comments on the magazine Théoric not without mischievousness, “will give a new breath to Atmos”.

Despite everything the good will of the company Eureka, Oric will die out a few months later. Téléstrat arrives too late. Always based on one 6502 (microprocessor 8 bits), it as of its exit is concurencé by the computers 16 bits type Amiga de Commodore and Atari ST Its only added-value compared to Oric Atmos lay in an extended BASIC, more important connectors (catches joystick or mouse) and a predisposition to telematics. The catch MIDDAY that the musicians waited was not in fact not functional. Atari they offered this possibility (out of standard).

Eureka sponge in 1988 for lack of money throws.
