Orgon
Geography
Orgon is a village of the Rhone delta located at the north of the department and the foot of the solid mass of the Alpilles. Orgon is to 25 km of Avignon, 40 km of Aix-en-Provence, and with 60 km of Marseilles. It counts 2700 inhabitants approximately.
History
- Urgonum, Castrum of Urgone in the texts of the Middle Ages of 1183, is one of the top-places of Provence.

Of many vestiges of Neolithic age was found in the small valley of Lavau and it is probable that a Oppidum celto-Ligurian exitait on the hill of Montsauvy (Mountain of Salviens).

As for the traces of Roman occupation, they are very numerous mainly in the district of Saint-Veran where one exhumed burials, currencies and statues.

Residence of Templiers and hospital of Midsummer's Day of Jerusalem in the districts of the manurings and the needle, Orgon begins its history with the Middle Ages with its castle, fortified town and prison, which plays a big role as from the 13th century.

in 1204 Alphonse Count de Provence gives the castle to Guillaume Count de Forcalquier in guarantee of a treaty and Raymond Béranger will give the same pledge in 1228.

on May 1st 1303, Gabriel Salvagi of Genoa receives the castle of Charles the Lame. In 1338 the seigniory is between the hands of Raymond d' Agoult.

After the donation of the queen Jeanne in 1379 of other concessions will take place in 1424, 1435, 1438 to this king Rene included/understood it in the dowry his/her daughter Yolande of Anjou married to Ferry II of Lorraine, Count de Vaudémont and of Guise.

In 1653, commnauté of Orgon receives Henri de Guise “the islands, accréments and alluvial deposit” of the Durance and the January 15th 1660, at the time of the passage of Louis XIV, profits from a tax reduction.

the revolutionary period is very agitated. Jean Charles Soulier president of the club " Freedom and the equality” are assassinated during the reaction Thermidor ienne the February 16th 1795.

Orgon is the fatherland of the poet Antoine Pomme 1620 of the soldiers of the empire Colombet, Rimbaud, Brémond of the painter Louis Espérandieu 1787-1857, of the bienfaitrice of the poor, Madeleine Laugier 1801-1880 and of the ancestors of Edmond Rostand, author of “the Eaglet” and “Cyrano of Bergerac”.
