The traditional organist

The traditional trade of organist is today the only trade of musician of service . Indeed, the majority of the traditional organists are generally titular of an instrument installed in a religious building and are remunerated to accompany the offices in the rites Catholique S, Anglican S or Protesting S. In general where an organ is finds at least a titular organist. It should be noted that one also finds, but in less measurement, of the organ in the synagogs (in particular the organ Cavaillé-coll of the synagog of Paris) and in the temples of certain minor religions (in particular movements with biblical referent, for example adventists and Mormons).

The traditional organists are divided into two categories: the liturgical organists and the organists concert performers .

The liturgical organist is devoted exclusively to the musical accompaniment of the religious offices. Its main activity is the accompaniment of the catholic mass or the Protestant worship or Anglican. But it has a function much more popular when it accompanies a marriage or a burial, ritual for which there exists a specific and well-known organistic literature of the public: famous wedding marches and other funeral marches. In addition the liturgical organist is often associated with other musical activities within the parochial community and it can thus be also a choirmaster or chief of chorus and consequently direct a choral society.

The organist concert performer (one says also organist recitalist ) is almost always a liturgical organist, but it followed a thorough formation enabling him to occur in concerts. Its activity thus leaves the pertaining to worship framework and it is through him that the organ exists as an instrument soloist and that the major works, almost ever played during an office, can be heard. It is of course with the organist recitalist that one will appeal to play in concert halls or auditoriums equipped with an organ, like carrying out recordings.

The organist of Jazz

The organist of jazz is the musician who plays of the jazz to the organ. In general, when one speaks about jazz to the organ, one implies that it is rather about the Orgue Hammond, i.e. a electronic Orgue. Nevertheless, nothing prohibits to play of the jazz on a traditional organ and that is usually done, especially in the United States. Keith Jarrett recorded several CD in which he improvises on an organ with pipes.
