Order of the British Empire

The excellentissime order of the British Empire ( Most Excels Order off the British Empire ) is an order of knighthood of the British honorary system. It is established in 1917 by the king Georges V. The currency of the order is For God and the Empire ( For God and the Empire ).

The order comprises five ranks (title shortened between brackets):

Knight or lady Grand Cross ( Knight/Rams Great Cross-country race (GBE))
Knight or lady commander ( Knight/Rams To order (KBE/DBE))
Commander ( To order (CBE))
Officer ( Officer (OBE))
Member ( Member (MBE))

The knights and ladies have the right to carry the honorary predicate Sir or Dame in front of their first name.

The last title is the Medal of the British empire ( British Empire Medal (BEM)) who is not allotted any more to the the United Kingdom but continuous to be it in certain countries of the the Commonwealth.

The number of members in the Order is limited to 100 Grand Crosses, 845 knights and ladies, and 8960 commanders. Moreover, each year a maximum of 858 officers and 1464 members can be promoted.

The members are civil or soldiers.

The order has a vault in the crypt of the Cathédrale Saint-Paul of London but its most important offices are celebrated at the higher level.

Badges

The Collier is a money chain made up of six medallions carrying the royal weapons alternating with six medallions carrying monogram GRI ( Georgius Rex Imperator : Georges king and emperor). Only the Grand Crosses receive the collar which they carry around the neck.

The Badge is a surmounted cross of a gold medallion. It comprises the effigies of Georges V and his Mary wife, surrounded by a red circle carrying the currency of the order in gold letters. On the other face is monogram GRI. The medallion is summoned crown of the empire. The Grand Crosses suspend the Badge with the Collar. The knights and ladies suspend it with a ribbon carried around the neck.

The Star is a silver star with eight branches carrying the same medallion as that of the badge. Only the Grand Crosses, the knights and the ladies carry it.

Although the majority of the member elects are British or other Commonwealth Countries, the honor is occasionally granted to foreigners. However, they will not be able to use name Sir or Dame unless they do not become a subject of the British monarch (such Sir Yehudi Menuhin and Sir John Paul Getty, Jr.). Moreover foreigners are not taken into account in the annual quotas of adhesion.
