Order of Saint-Georges of Burgundy
History
According to certain historians, the brotherhood of the Knights of Saint-Georges of Burgundy was instituted about 1435 by Philibert de Mollans, inhabitant of Franche-Comté gentleman and rider of the duke of Burgundy, Philippe the Good. A preceding association of knights of Saint-Georges had been founded with Rougemont (current department of the Doubs) towards 1300, but it disappeared towards the end from XIVe century following the ceaseless wars.Philibert de Mollans wanted to restore this order after its return of Holy Land, from where it had brought back Reliques supposed to be those of Saint-Georges de Lydda. Towards 1435 it thus joins together a certain number of noble Burgundian knights in his castle of Rougemont to honor these Reliques.
This brotherhood decided to celebrate each year a festival in the honor of the saint by gathering in the vault of the castle the day before the April 23rd of each year, dates from the festival of the Saint-Georges.
Saint-Georges de Lydda is patron saint of the knights and the medal about Saint-Georges of Burgundy represents the saint with horse embanking the dragon with a lance.
