Order of Merit (the United Kingdom)

The Order of Merit ( Order off Merit or OM) was instituted by the king Edouard VII in 1902. It is intended to reward the artistic, literary and scientific merits, like, more rarely, the military services.
The order is limited to twenty-four regular members assisted foreign honorary members. It does not confer the title of knight or Dame, but only the right to make follow its name of the initial OM.
Its badge is a cross pattée out of gold enamelled of red, being marked for merit (" for the mérite"). Its ribbon is red and blue semi-party.
Among his current members, in addition to the queen, the duke of Edinburgh and the prince of Wales, one counts the professional singer Joan Sutherland, the architect Norman Foster, old the Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and Tim Berners-Lee, the Co-inventor of the World Wide Web.
