Creation

The Order of Canada was instituted on April 17th, 1967 in Canada by the Reine Elizabeth II, on the councils of the Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson. The order was created to recognize the exemplary achievements and the services rendered to Canada, by Canadian. The reward was officially revealed on July 1st, 1967 in Canada to celebrate the 100e birthday of the formation of the Dominion of Canada. The General governor Roland Michener was the first to be recruited with the Order, then, 90 people joined it six days later is on July 7th, 1967 in Canada. The creation of the Order was the beginning of the establishment of a Canadian system of honors, a reward system and the decorations granted to Canadian and foreigners. The creation of this system broke the dependancy of Canada towards the system of honors used by the the United Kingdom and some of its old colonies and old Dominions. Before the Order of Canada is created, the principal order presented to Canadian for the criteria indicated higher was the Order of the British Empire. Vincent Massey, Louis the St. Lawrence, Hugh MacLennan, Father David Bauer, Gabrielle Roy, Donald Creighton, Therese Casgrain, Wilder Penfield, Arthur Lismer and Maurice Richard belonged to the first people to being recruited with the Order. The Queen was made give the badge of sovereign by the General governor, Roland Michener, during a visit of this one with London in 1967 and it carried it for the first time during a banquet to Yellowknife in July 1970 to Canada.

Since the Order of Canada was created, the Australia created a similar reward system: the Order of Australia. However, this one was granted more liberally, especially for the foreigners, that the Order of Canada was it. In 1996, the New Zealand created the Order of Merit, an order of five levels of knighthood based on the Order of the British Empire.

Ranks

There are three ranks (levels) with the Order of Canada. Companion (highest), officer and member, each one have distinct letters that the people member elects about Canada are in right to affix following their name. Promotions on the level of the ranks are possible; usually, it is not done in the first five years following the recruitment of the person. For example, the film producer, Denys Arcand, were promoted of Officer with Companion about Canada. Initially, the order had only two rows, Compagnon about Canada and the Médaille of Courage. July 1st, 1972, the levels of officer and member were introduced and all the existing members became officers.

The central disc comprises a maple sheet, in red enamelled for the companions, gold for the officers and money for the members on an enamelled white zone surrounded by an enamelled red ring carrying the currency of the order and a crown of Saint-Edward on the top of this one. Endorsement is empty except for the word “Canada” which is inscrit." there;. The ribbon consists with red and white bands similarly alternate with the Canadian flag. The medals about Canada can be left like heritage with the descendants, but can in no time being sold with whoever. When a member of the order receives a promotion, the individual must turn over the original medal to the chancellery before receiving his new medal.

The medals, like the majority of the rewards offered in the Canadian system of honors, were designed by Bruce W. Beatty, which in date of 2004 had witnessed all the ceremonies of nominations since 1967. It is itself become Membre about Canada in 1990.

When an individual carries medals and decorations, the Order of Canada east front door any other national order and before almost all Canadian decorations. Only the Cross of Victoria and the Croix of Bravery are carried before the Order of Canada. The ranks of Companion and Officer carry their medal with a ribbon passing by the neck, while the rank of Member hangs the medal on the left side of their jacket. Until very recently, the recruited women were to carry the order with a ribbon in the form of loop which was positioned with the left. Apart from the special occasions determined by the General governor, the women carry from now on the order in the same way that the men, however, Michaëlle Jean, Gouverneure general of Canada in station, chose to carry the order with the ribbon in the form of loop.

Admissibility

All Canadian in life is acceptable for any of the three rewards, except the federal and provincial politicians and the judges when they are in station. The member elects are announced twice per year, in the neighborhoods of on January 1st and of July 1st. The recruits which die before the ceremony of nomination are always regarded as member of the order. Groups of people who made the honourable act unit are also acceptable to be recruited. For example, the Canadian group Rush (Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart) was recruited Officier about Canada, it acted of the first time that a group was rather selected than an individual.

The citizens of other countries are acceptable to receive an honorary reward with any of the three levels. Not more than five honorary recruits can be selected each year.

The ceremonies are generally led by the General governor to Rideau Hall to Ottawa or rare occasions when it comes to the country, by the Queen itself. The main reason which the order is not presented to Rideau Hall east which the member elect is unable to go to Ottawa. For example, in 1980, the legendary athlete Terry Fox which suffered from a final cancer in phase. In these cases, the General governor usually goes in the room of hospital.

Another example, the Queen Elizabeth, the mother of the Elizabeth II Queen, in 2000, at the 100 years age, which became honorary Compagne about Canada with Clarence House in London. Rather than to affix the medal on the old lady, which had just received an operation with the hip, Adrienne Clarkson, Gouverneure general in station at this time, rather gave to him directly in its hands. Before Adrienne Clarkson becomes Gouverneure general of Canada, the Order of Canada was seldom given apart from Rideau hall or of the second home of the General governor the Citadelle of Quebec. Under its mandate, Adrienne Clarkson held of the ceremonies of nomination in cities like St John' S or Vancouver. She also delegated other people to give the rewards when it was too difficult for her or for the member elect to travel.

Although the ceremonies of nominations are generally carried out by the General governor, the task can be deputy with another individual, for example, the Lieutenant-governor of a Canadian Province. It was the case for Mervyn Wilkinson which was recruited with the order by Iona Campagnolo the Lieutenant-governor of the Colombia-British in 2002.

Although the federal and provincial politicians who sit cannot be recruited within the order, it is accepted that influential chiefs as of former Prime Ministers are recruited after they had left their office. In fact, of all the Prime Ministers in life after the creation of the order except for the recent ones and that in station at present (Kim Campbell, Jean Chrétien, Paul Martin and Stephen To grip), only John Diefenbaker was not recruited with the order. After having lost the elections of 1963, Diefenbaker remained as a deputy and he died in 1979, whereas he always sat, thus not becoming never acceptable. Certain politicians of foreground like ED Broadbent, former chief of NPD, and the former Prime Minister Joe Clark were recruited, then are become again appointed.

The senators cannot be recruited when they are in station, however, there are several senators who were recruited before returning in station. Currently, there is 13 of them which belongs to the order. They are (in alphabetical order): Tommy Banks, Michel Biron, Ione Christensen, Romeo Dallaire, Trevor Eyton, Serge Joyal, Wilbert Keon, Jean Lapointe, Sandra Lovelace Nicholas, Frank Mahovlich, Donald Oliver, Nancy Ruth and Hugh Segal.

A new recruit that its adhesion with the order is approved during its alive, but which dies before it is announced it publicly or that its nomination takes place, can be invested after its death. In 2005, the recruitment of the journalist Peter Jennings was announced under these circumstances. Its family accepted the reward on her behalf.

The oldest person with being invested with the Order of Canada was the Dr. Cornelius Wiebe which was 106 years old at the time of its nomination in 1999.

A member of the order can see himself relieved of this one if the Advisory counsel finds that its actions discredited it. In date of 2006, only two people were made relieve about Canada: Alan Eagleson and David Ahenakew. Eagleson was made withdraw order after being imprisoned for fraud in 1998. As for Ahenakew, it is for its remarks anti-semites returned in 2002.

So that a person is made withdraw the order, the Advisory counsel must approve the dismissal and send a letter to the person in question announcing their decision to him.
