Order of Arts and the Letters
The Order of Arts and the Letters is a honorary Décoration French instituted the May 2nd 1957 and managed by the ministry for the Culture. The reorganization of French decorations carried out by the Général de Gaulle in 1963 does not have affected the order. The council of the Order of Arts and the Letters includes/understands 12 members of right ( in particular directors of the general administration of the ministry for the culture, the public records, the reading and the museums of France ) and 13 members named by the minister. The order rewards “ the people who were characterized by their creations in the artistic field or literary or by the contribution which they made to the radiation of arts and the letters to France and in the world ”
Ranks
The Order of Arts and the Letters includes/understands 3 ranks: knight, officer and commander. The first rank can be decreed only with artists at least some 30 year old and enjoying their Civil laws. The two higher ranks can be allotted only on the condition of justifying of a 5 years minimum of seniority in the rank lower. Since the decree of the May 5th 1997, the annual quota amounts to 450 knights, 140 officers and 50 commanders; it is thus a decoration relatively little distributed.
Ribbon
The ribbon of the order 37 mm is broad, and composed of 5 dark bands green of 5,5 mm, separated by four white vertical lines from 2,4 Misters the officers have in addition to the ribbon a Rosette and the commanders carry a tie in saltire. The badge is a double cross vis-a-vis eight branches, enamelled of green and crimped of an arabesque silver plated or gilded for the officers and commanders, the latter having a larger badge. One sees on the central medallion a Monogram of the letters has and L.
