Orde Charles Wingate (February 26th, 1903 - March 24th, 1944) is a general of the armed British.
Wingate is resulting from a colonial military family in India, it was Christian Zionist by conviction under influence of his/her mother, intellectual per taste and eccentric English per tendency against the rigorous formalism of a company conformist, especially in a family of military and Protestant tradition, guardian of the law and order. In 1921, it integrated “Royal Military Academy de Woolwich” and accepted its patent of artillerist in 1923 and started to learn Arabic for finally being affected in Sudan by his cousin, Sir Reginald Wingate, General governor of Sudan.
Arrived at the Sudan, it joined the Defense force of Sudan in 1928 to patrol along the border Abyssinie and to catch traffickers of slaves and ivory poachers. There, it changed the traditional methods of patrol for tightening ambushes. At the end of its service in 1933, it carried out a short unfruitful forwarding and it married in 1935, at 32 years, with Lorna Moncrieff which was 16 years old.
In 1936, Wingate was affected in Palestine under British mandate with the Staff as officer of information. There, he saw the creation of the Jewish State like a religious duty and the achievement of a Christian prophecy and made an alliance with the Jewish political leaders when started the Arab guerilla with attacks against at the same time the civils servant and the installations of the British mandate and the Jewish communities. These attacks were made known under the name of " Revolt Arabe". Wingate engaged politically near the Jewish leaders and formulated the idea to train Jewish commandos led by British officers who had experience and the formation soldiers and personally submitted this idea to the General Archibald Wavell, who was the commander of the British forces in Palestine.
After the agreement of Wavell, Wingate convinced the Jewish Agency and the command of the " Haganah ", the Jewish group armed with self-defense and the Haining General, the new British commander in Palestine, to give the permission to create in June 1938 the Special Night Squads (special Esquadrons of night), made of British and Jewish volunteers of Haganah which tightened ambushes against Arabic who were caught of it with the pipelines British Petroleum and with the isolated Kiboutzim. Wingate involved and led these patrols to give hard punishments to the villages which had helped or lodged saboteurs. These methods effective, but were seriously disapproved by the British and Jewish authorities. Its political commitment and soldier in favor of the creation of a Jewish State were regarded by its hierarchically superiors as incompatible with his position of British officer of the information in this country and in May of 1939 it was moved in Great Britain.
Thus, Wingate had become a hero of the Jewish communities of Palestine and had appreciated Moshe Dayan pulled by him and which stated to have very learned from him.
One finds Wingate in January 1941 in Ethiopia. Under the orders of the Wavell general, it will assemble the insurrection of Ethiopian against Italy and will bring back the emperor Hailé Sélassié to Addis-Abeba on May 5th.
In 1942, Wavell then in station in India makes it require for operations of guerilla in Burma. The 77e mobile brigade independent, made up British reservists, Burmese fusiliers and of Gurjhas, will become after a very hard drive the Chindits.
In 1944, promoted general, he died in an air crash during an inspection.
Wingate was certainly more known to have organized and have led to the combat the Chindits. Its ideas, in Egypt, on the patrols of in-depth penetration gave rise to the LRDG (Long Arranges Serves Group) and to SAS (Special Air Service) carried out by others.
