Biographical note
Emma Magdalena Rosalia Maria Josefa Barbara Orczy was born in Tarnaörs, in Hungary, on September 23rd, 1865, girl of the Baron Felix Orczy (type-setter) and of his wife, the Countess Emma Wass. Among the Orczy family friends appeared Charles Gounod, Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner.
His/her parents having left Hungary in 1868, in fear of a country revolt, lived with Brussels and Paris, where Emma studied the music. In 1880, the family settled in London, with 162 Great Street Portland cement. Emma Orczy followed the courses of West London School off Art then of Heatherley' S School off Fine Art, where it met Montague Maclean Barstow, which it married in 1894.
The husbands being very desilvered, Emma Orczy had to work with her husband as translator and illustrator. Their only son, John Montague Orczy-Barstow, were born on February 25th, 1899. Little time after, the Orczy baroness published its first novel, The Emperor' S Candlesticks (1899), who did not have any success. On the other hand, a series of stories of detectives appeared in the Royal Magazine knew a certain audience. Its following book, In Mary' S Reign (1901), was accepted better, and in 1903 she wrote with her husband a play based on one of her news, putting in scene an English knight who collected French aristocrats fleeing the French revolution: the Scarlet pimpernel. She also drew from it a novel which she subjected to a dozen editors. During this time, the part was accepted in a theater of West End and was a great success during four years. This success was reflected on the novel published then under the same title.
The Orczy baroness wrote several continuations with the adventures of Sir Percy Blakeney, the Scarlet pimpernel, whose first entitled I Will Repay (1906) was most popular. She also wrote many novels of mystery and adventures. Its book Lady Molly off Scotland Yard was the first to introduce a woman detective like main character. The success of its work enabled him to buy a property with Monte Carlo.
She died in Henley-one-Thames it on November 12th, 1947.
His/her son, John Montague Orczy-Barstow, became a writer under the pseudonym of John Blakeney, taking again the family name of the most famous character created by his mother.
