History
The grounds of Orcival were property of the counts, then Dolphins of Auvergne until in 1243. At the 11th century, a church, located at the east of the village, accommodated a Statue of the Virgin, extremely venerated; a legend claimed that it had been carved by Saint-Luc.
Any door to believe besides that the current Basilique was built because of the growing success of a Pèlerinage. Notre-Dame d' Orcival then became the new place of reception of the famous statue, preserved today in the sanctuary of the church, and which is since the object of a pilgrimage which takes place every year Thursday of the Ascension. The day before at the evening, the pilgrims, come in the night from all the area, attend with a Torchlight procession and a midnight mass.
One allots to this basilica a capacity miracle-worker . It is sometimes called our Dame of irons for its intercession in favor of the Prisonnier S. On the walls of the Southern transept balls and chains are suspended, which are ex-votos deposited here by prisoners released after having requested Notre Dame d' Orcival .

Notre-Dame basilica
Notre Dame of Orcival is one of the jewels of the Romanesque art auvergnat, with Notre-Dame of the Port to Clermont-Ferrand, Saint-Austremoine with Issoire, the church of Saint-Nectaire, that of Saint-Saturnin.
This Romance church , high with the row of Basilica in 1894 by the Pope Leon XIII, was built by the Moine S of Chair-God at the beginning 12th century, probably financed by Guillaume VII, count d' Auvergne. It was finished in 1166. One thinks that it was undoubtedly built in only one shift, within sight of the homogeneity of his architecture.
The architectural and decorative characteristics of the basilica of Orcival are comparable with those of the other major churches of Low-Auvergne. With its Bedside with the proportions elegant, definitely arranged hierarchically, its antiquated Crypt, inspired by underground by the Cathedral of Clermont and its Nave with the richly decorated capitals, the basilica of Orcival is on the other hand one of the rare churches of Auvergne to have preserved its turn of Clocher of origin.
The broken relief of the site dictated to the men who built it the particular proportion of the building: the side of the valley had to be started to make it possible to build the Western frontage…
