Optometry

The optometry indicates the whole of the techniques and the processes making it possible to determine the various forms of Amétropie.

She studies and looks further into the knowledge of the visual process, establishes and applies the techniques and the means necessary to prevent and compensate for the visual problems. (extracted the definition of the Company of optometry from Europe, 1988)

In France the diploma of optometry does not have true official recognition; the practice of optometry is the subject only of a tolerance on behalf of the health authorities. On the other hand to the the United States, the Canada, the the United Kingdom, or to the Netherlands, the delivered diploma gives the access under doctor in optometry (OD) which in fact a completely independent profession. In the majority of the anglophone countries, the role of optometry includes/understands the detection of the ocular anomalies. It is not the case in certain countries of the European Union like France or the Greece. The European movement aims at unifying the whole of the legislations of the union on the practice of optometry. The creation and the development of the European diploma of optometry by the European Association of the professionals of optics and optometry (ECOO) go in this direction.

There exist several specialities and modes of practice: for example behavioral, functional optometry or développementale.
