Opossum (word algonquin wapathemwa ) or sarigue is a name given to the Mammifère S marsupial American of didelphidés ( Didelphidae ). Largest is the Opossum of Virginia ( Didelphis virginiana ), which tends to be distributed in all United States. The surface of distribution of didelphidés extends from the southern half of the the United States in north of the Argentine. The opossum is present also in New Zealand where it was introduced by the first colonists, it is the cause of devastation there among the indigenous species.
The majority of the opossums are Arboricole S; the prehensile feet are equipped with robust nails. The opossum has night manners; it is a predator of reptiles, birds and small mammals. The females put low after 8 to 14 days of gestation; the small one lives then during more than one hundred days in the Marsupium of his/her mother.

Remarks
In the beginning the denomination sarigue indicated the whole of the Didelphidé S, that of opossum being reserved for
Didelphis marsupialis.
It seems that the famous stereotype (with clean and with appeared!) sarigue carrying its small rolled up on its tail relates to only the group of the Philander S.
The opossum in New Zealand
The opossum is regarded in
New Zealand as a very harmful animal and its hunting is a national sport: any New Zealander who respects himself must kill the most possible opossums.
The opossums are the predatory frightening ones for New Zealand native fauna and the flora. They eat eggs of the birds and when they mark their territory, they often wound with dead the young native trees with very slow growth.
Cuddly toys, “scratched possum”, are to be sold in New Zealand (since the Années 1990), representing a opossum flattened with a tire track.
