Oporto União

Oporto União is a city Brésil ienne north of the State of Santa Catarina. It is located by a Latitude of 26º 14 ' 16" south and by a Longitude of 51º 04 ' 40" west, with a Altitude of 795 meters. Its population was estimated at: 33095 inhabitants in 2006. The municipality extends on 851 km ².

Geography

The municipality is crossed by the course of the Rio Iguaçu which also marks the border with the municipality of União da Vitória in the State of the Paraná. Oporto União is located in the tops plates north of Santa Catarina. The relief of the municipality is varied, shared between Plaine S, Montagne S, Vallée S and large plains of floods (Varzea S) of the basins of the rivères Iguaçu and Jangada, at the border with Paraná, and of the Rio Timbó. The average Température is of 17°C and the annual Précipitation S are of 1.400 millimetres.

History

The history of the city begins in 1842, with the discovery of a Gué on the Rio Iguaçu which allowed the passage of the herds come from the fields of Palmas. This point was also used as place of loading and unloading for those using Rio Iguaçu like means of transport, from where the first name of the locality: Oporto da União (“port of the Portuguese union”). The small town believes gradually and, into 1855, changes name for Oporto União da Vitória . In 1881, the navigation with vapor is introduced on Rio Iguaçu, for the carriage of passengers and goods. The history of the city is strongly related to the Rivière since its origins.

The first European colonists (mainly of the German ) arrive in the area in 1881. Later, of new colonists, Polish, Ukrainian, Austrian and Russian, join them. At the beginning of the 20th century, immigrants Lebanon board also arrive. With the demographic development, the municipality of União da Vitória is created in 1901.

After the conflict of the Contestado (1912 - 1916), on September 5th 1917, the municipality is divided between União da Vitória with the Paraná and Oporto União with the Santa Catarina. Rio Iguaçu (in the east) and the Railway (in the center) mark the border between the two cities, called the “binoculars of Iguaçu”.

Economy

The economic main activities of the municipality are:
  • the industry of wood: many factories exploit the forest resources present in the area, in particular for the production of doors and windows in Bois.
  • the Agro-alimentary : these industries, by emphasizing the local resources agricultural S, make it possible to slow down the Rural migration. The principal local productions are the Saucisse S and the Charcuterie.

The city counts various tourist attractions, among which one can quote:

    • the source of light , on the place Hercílio Luz;
    • the railway bridge on Rio Iguaçú, with its 1500 meters length;
    • the building of the railway Station, considered as one of most beautiful of Brazil.

  • on the level sculptures:
    • the monument with those which did not return , dedicated to the victims of the Guerre of Contestado;
    • the road of the immigrants , along the avenue Perimetric, presents various sculptures dedicated to the various immigrants who took part in the urban development.

  • with regard to the events:
    • the festival of Saint Pierre and Saint Paul has been held in July, every year for 70 years in the district São Pedro, of which the principal attraction and artisanal development of the wood fire ( will fogueira of lenha in Portuguese) largest possible;
    • the Bergbauernfest (“festival of the colonists of the mountains”) which is held in November, in the locality of Maratá, is a festival taking again the German traditions.

  • for the natural wealths: the municipality has many River and Cascade S which models the local landscape, like the Salto C Pintado with its 30 meters height, or the Salto C Rio back Pardos 72 meters height . The city is ideal for the practice of sport of full nature like the Rappel, the Trekking or Kayak.
