History
Pre-European period
The first occupants of the places are probably groups of hunters-gatherers originating in the valley of the Rio Uruguai, made on the territory of the
Santa Catarina current around 3000 years before J.C. Around 1000 years before J.C., the first cores of tribes are formed, named then “I”. On the littoral Indians of the nation Tupi live - Guarani, named Carijós. Indigenous presence in Oporto Belo, only remain certain toponyms of origin Tupi-Guarani, the archaeological parts and the rupestral inscriptions.
First visitors
The area, in the past named
Enseada das Garoupas , is often visited by the
Portuguese in their attempts to occupy the territory after the discovery of the Brésil. The reports/ratios of the explorers are then always the same ones: grounds low in Gold, mountains close to the littoral, marshy grounds
, therefore little of interest for the Portuguese crown. They however describe the existence of a handle with quiet, ideal water to shelter the ships of the storms.
In 1703, a first attempt at occupation of the ground is installation. Portuguese Domingos de Oliveira Rosa fixes itself in bay in the search of gold. But the little of success of its attempt pushes it to give up quickly. In 1753, the Portuguese government founds a core of settlement in the area. It sends 60 couples since the the Azores to begin a colonization. The growth of the small colony is slow and difficult from its situation far from the center administration of the Capitainerie of Santa Catarina and of the attacks of the Spanish .
Development of the colony
In
1818, the small colony of
Enseada das Garoupas is high with the row of colony under the name of
Nova Ericeira , after the arrival of 101 people brought since
Ericeira to the
Portugal, to develop the activity of
fishing in the area. Gradually, the population increases and the colony becomes
Freguesia in
1824. Concentration of population and the existence of various equipment (schools, military station, church and even a surgeon) made locality an important center halfway between São Francisco and Desterro. The locality also has one of the best ports of the area, fact of great importance because the sea is still the principal means of communication at the time. The name of
Nova Ericeira is not really applied and the city continues to be called
Enseada das Garoupas until the
October 13rd 1832, when it changes name for
Vila of Oporto Belo (“village of the beautiful French port”), for the beauty and the peace of its water. December 13rd of this same year is created the municipality of Oporto Belo, dismembered São Francisco.
