Operations of maintenance of peace
The operations of maintenance of peace are authorized by the Safety advice of the United Nations to bring back peace in a country or a territory. They are supervised by the Département of the operations of maintenance of peace
Since 1948, date of the first operation (ONUST), the United Nations deployed 61 operations of maintenance of the peace, of which 15 are always in hand (of which the first: ONUST, in Israel and occupied Palestinian Territories).

The Department of the operations of maintenance of peace has an annual budget of more than 5 billion dollars US (in 2006). The approximate sum spent for the operations of maintenance of peace since 1948 reached the 42 billion dollars US. It manages 15 operations of maintenance of peace and 3 missions political and of support for the consolidation of peace (MINUNEP, MANUA and BINUSIL).
At the budgetary level, only six countries contribute to more than 5% of the budget of the operations of maintenance of peace: the the United States (26%), the Japan (19%), the Germany (9%), the the United Kingdom (7%), the France (7%) and the Italy (5%). With them six, they deal with close to the three-quarters (73%) of the expenditure of maintenance of peace.
At February 28th, 2007, the three countries providing the most soldiers to these operations are the Pakistan (10 169), the Bangladesh (9 653) and the India (9 608). The fourth and the fifth are far behind: the Jordan (3 572) and the Nepal (3 369). For information, France is 10th with 2.023 soldiers sent.
