The Opening for an academic festival, COp 80 of Johannes Brahms was written during the summer 1880, one year before its third symphony. It is contemporary different “large” tragic Ouverture which is its during.

This opening was made up in thanks for its nomination as a doctor “Honoris causa” at the university of Breslau. Initially, it was satisfied besides with a simple handwritten note but his/her friend the violonist Joseph Joachim made him understand that could not be enough. He thus wrote the partition of this opening. They are in fact one pot-rotted made up three drinking songs student's (“Wir hatten gebauet ein stattliches Haus”, “Fuchslieds” and “Gaudeamus igitur”), transcribed for symphonic full orchestra in a deeply traditional tradition remaining however.
