Open Canvas
Open Canvas is a natural design software (i.e. it tries to reproduce the feature of the traditional drawing tools such as the pencil, the aerographer, etc). Although it reproduces a natural feeling of the drawing, it does not have a battery of realistic brushes like a numerical software of painting (e.g.: Corel Painter, ArtRage). However the end result is comparable with numerical painting at the level of returned.
At the disposal the functions of range are also placed, reasons…
In addition to its graphic functions (brushes, filters, masks, copies), it has a single function with the software of this type which is the recording and the reading of the process of drawing, which one sees the development being held under our eyes milks by feature, detail after detail, like a film. This function makes it possible to have a very useful didactic source, since the site has a great quantity of these files called “vent files”, produced by the many members of the community.
The fact that this software is specialized makes that it is very light in memory, and can be used on one 350 MHz/128 Mo (really tested), and for a very accessible price, compared with the more general software in the field (Adobe Photoshop,…).
There exists a free version of this software, which is version 1. This version has limitations on the level of the capacities inherent in the evolution of the functions, but has a function which was abandoned in the following versions, and which makes it possible 4 people to paint at the same time on the same table by the means of a network (Internet for example).
This Logiciel owner is of origin Japanese but available in english language version on their site. However, the versions beta are available only in Japanese. This software delivers its full capacities only with one graphics tablet.
Open Canvas is, from its country of origin, very much used for the realization of CG of the manga type. It can of course be used for any other style, but it was probably optimized for the drawing of the manga type. There exists currently a free alternative to this software, Pixia which also makes it possible to reproduce “natural” drawings.
