OpenOffice.org Base is the management system of relational databases (SGBDR) suggested by the office automation Suite OpenOffice.org starting from its version 2.0.

This software allows creation and handling:

  • of databases, and their comparisons,
  • of requests, and sights
  • of form of consultation, or seizure,
  • of simple states (mass mailing type), or complexes, starting from version 2.3.0 by the addition of the extension Sun Builder Carryforward, available on the site of extensions of OpenOffice.org

Like the Software Microsoft Access, which it takes as a starting point, Base is compatible with many formats of file of which MySQL/PostgreSQL and DBASE; its own format is odb (format OASIS).

OpenOffice.org Base corresponds to a need for the users eager to use a relational Database external after. In the previous versions to the 2.0, the databases were integrated into the interface, accessible by the menu data Affichage/Sources. They have from now on their dedicated software, as well as Writer ( Word processing), Calc (Tableur), Impress ( presentation) or Draw (vectorial Dessin). Base does not replace therefore the data sources, it offers a format of file native and in conformity with the free standard “OASIS”.

The basic engine of data used is HSQLDB.

Pre-necessary: installation of a interpreter Java.
