Opava (Tchéquie)
Opava ( German Troppau in , Opawa in Polish) is a city of the north of the Tchéquie, founded on the river éponyme. It is the historical capital of the Czech Silesia. Opava is located from now on in the administrative area of the Moravie-Silesia and has a population of 59 900 inhabitants (in January 2005).
History
Opava is mentioned for the first time in 1195. It becomes capital of one of the duchies of Silesia. After the major part of Silesia was annexed by the Prussia in 1740, the territory, always attached to the crown of the Habsbourg, was famous Austrian Silesia with Opava like capital of 1742 with 1918. The Conférence of Troppau (German name of Opava) was held in particular in this city in 1820. After the Austro-Hungarian defeat in 1918, Opava became a town of Czechoslovakia.Between 1938 and 1945, Opava was occupied by the Nazis. After the Second world war, following the Decrees Beneš, the German population was excluded in 1945 - 1946 and several of enter them settled with Bamberg in Germany.
