--> Opatija (in Italian Abbazia ) is a tourist city of Croatia, located at the west of Rijeka, in Istrie, at the bottom of bay of Kvarner, the foot of the snow-covered summits of the Ucka mount.
In its bosky bower, Opatija enjoys a soft Mediterranean climate, with the shelter of the cold winds.
The city is located at 110 km of Trieste (Italy), at 200 km of Zagreb and at 250 km of Venice (Italy).
It was formerly a very fashionable station in which, since the middle of the 19th century remained of the kings, the emperors, the aristocrats, the very rich people and the famous artists. It was called, the “Austrian Nice”. The first town hall goes back to 1840.
However the station of holiday was built after the doctor Juraj Matija Sporer suggested in 1859, the creation of a company for the exploitation with Opatija of the benefits of the stays to the sea for health. The preliminary draft envisaged only 120 villas of Master. The first two luxury hotels - the " Kvarner" and l'" Impérial" - opened in 1885.
The famous ballerina Isadora Duncan had appreciated it and there found the inspiration by observing the grace of the sheets of the palm trees “tremble with the wind of the morning”.
