The name of Oostkapelle comes owing to the fact that the church of the village was used as Amer, from benchmark on the coast, by the sailors zélandais, compared to that of Westkapelle. While Westkapelle evolved/moved starting from the Moyen-âge to become a strengthened village, Oostkapelle remained a village of farmers.
According to the example of Domburg and Zoutelande, Oostkapelle benefitted from the proximity of its vast beach to become a seaside resort.
