Ontario League Hockey

The League of Hockey of Ontario or LHO (in English: Ontario Hockey League or OHL ) is one of the three leagues major junior of level has tier I who constitutes the Canadian Ligue of hockey. Before 1980, it was known under the name of the Association of hockey of Ontario or AHO (in English: Ontario Hockey Association or OHA ).

It is composed of 20 teams divided into 4 divisions. Of these 20 teams, 17 are Ontarian, two come from the Michigan (Whalers de Plymouth, Spirit de Saginaw) and one of the Pennsylvania (Otters d' Érié). LHO provides nearly 20% of the active players of LNH; some great names of hockey like Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr or Bobby Smith, just as from the current high-speed motorboats like Joe Thornton or Rick Nash in particular, initially passed by there.

History

  • 1896 : The foundation of the OHA (Ontario Hockey Association).

  • 1951 : The OHA (Ontario Hockey Association) account 10 teams: the Spitfires de Windsor, the Hurricanes of Waterloo, the Majors de Toronto St Michael' S, the Teepees de Saint-Catharines, the Marlboros of Toronto, the Generals d' Oshawa, the Greenshirts de Kitchener, the Biltmores de Guelph, the Blackhawks de Galt and the Flyers de Barrie.

  • 1965 : The Nationals de London receive a frankness.

  • 1967 : The 67 ' S of Ottawa receive a frankness.

  • 1973 : Canadians of Kingston receive a frankness.

  • 1974 : Red Wings of Hamilton become Fincups of Hamilton.

  • 1975 the OHA reorganizes in a format has two dimensions. Emms division is made of Kitchener, Hamilton, Windsor, Toronto, St Catharines and London, while division Leyden consisten in Sault co. Marie, Ottawa, Kingston, Oshawa, Peterborough and Sudbury. Spitfires of Windsor receive a framnchise.

  • 1976 : Blackhawks of St Catharines move with Niagara Falls. Fincups of Hamilton move with St Catharines.

  • 1977 : Fincups of St Catharines Fincups move with Hamilton.

  • 1980 : Ontario Hockey Association is famous Ontario Hockey League.

  • 1981 : Royals of Cornwall are transferred since LHJMQ. The bulldozers of Belleville receive a frankness and play in Leyden division. Sudbury and Sault co. Marie is found in Emms division to compensate however that Toronto passed in Leyden division.

  • 1984 : Alexanders of Brantford are relocated with Hamilton. Spitfires de Windsor become Compuware Spitfires de Windsor.

  • 1988 : Steelhawks of Hamilton move with Niagara Falls. Canadians of Kingston become Raiders de Kingston.

  • 1989 : Marlboros of Toronto are relocated with Hamilton. Platers of Guelph move with Owen Sound. Raiders of Kingston change name to become Frontenacs de Kingston and Compuware Spitfires of Windsor becomes Spitfires de Windsor.

  • 1990 Compuware Ambassadors of Detroit are seen allotted a frankness in Emms division. North Bay and Sudbury is found in Leyden division to support the transfer.

  • 1991 : Dukes of Hamilton are transferred to Guelph.

  • 1994 : The league is subdivided in three divisions: Guelph, Sudbury, Owen Sound, Niagara Falls, and Kitchener in the Exchange Division; Kingston, Oshawa, North Bay, Belleville, Peterborough and Ottawa play in East Division; Strait, Windsor, Sarnia, London and Sault co. Marie in West Division. Royals of Newmarket move with Sarnia.

  • 1996 : Thunder of Niagara Falls is relocated with Érié to become Otters d' Érié. The club becomes the second American club.

  • 1998 : The OHL adopts a new format with 2 conferences and 4 divisions. Belleville, Kingston, Oshawa, Ottawa and Peterborough in East Division; Barrie, Mississauga, North Bay, St Michael' S and Sudbury in the Exchange Division (to supplement Eastern Conference). Brampton, Erie, Guelph, Kitchener and Owen Sound in Midwest Division; London, Plymouth, Sault co. Marie, Sarnia and Windsor in West Division (to supplement the Western Conference), that after Brampton and Mississauga is seen allotted franknesses.

  • 2002 : Centennials of North Bay are relocated and become Spirit of Saginaw. Brampton is found in the Exchange Division, and London is transferred in Midwest. Saginaw evolves/moves in West Division. The departure of Centennials changes the number of clubs in American ground to three, with two with the Michigan and one in Pennsylvania.
