Ontarian general election of 2007

The Ontarian general election of 2007 was held the October 10th 2007 in order to elect the deputies of the 39e legislature to the legislative Assemblée of the Ontario (Canada). Under the terms of a law adopted by the legislative Parliament in 2004, the elections proceed from now on on a date fixes given by a formula which places them roughly every four years, except in the event of defeat of the government at the time of a vote of confidence. Previously, the party in power had a considerable flexibility to determine the date of the elections, the only restriction being that an election was to be started at the latest five years before the return of the briefs of the preceding election.

The Liberal party of Ontario, directed by the Prime Minister Dalton McGuinty, was re-elected with a second consecutive majority mandate for the first time in 70 years, against the Parti progressist-conservative John Tory and the Nouveau Democratic party of Howard Hampton.

A Référendum was held jointly with the election to consult the population on the proposal of the Parliament citizen of Ontario on the electoral reform to found a new system of representation proportional mixed. This proposal however was disallowed by a majority of the population. A similar referendum had proceeded as a Colombia-British at the same time as the general election of 2005 in this province.

Surveys

Since the general election of 2003, several surveys were carried out in order to determine the tendency in the voting intentions of the voters. They show an important decline in the supports with the Liberal party following the budget of 2004. In general, the liberals are below their results of the election of 2003, the Nouveau Democratic party made important profits and the Parti progressist-conservative remained relative on the same level as in 2003.

Districts

Since 1996, the names and the limits of the provincial electoral constituencies in Ontario conformed to the federal districts. The districts were to be readjusted each time a readjustment was done at the federal level. In 2005, the legislative Parliament adopted the Loi of 2005 on the electoral representation , under the terms of which the provincial districts will not be identical any more to the district federal. For this election, Ontario is divided into 107 districts (against 106 at the federal level).

In practice, the great majority of the districts will remain identical to the federal districts all the same. They will preserve the same names unless the limits are changed.
