Onitsha

Onitsha is a port city on left bank of the Niger (river), in the south-east of the Nigeria. Its population is of more than 600.000 inhabitants. Onitsha is also the title of a novel of Jean-Marie-Gustave Clézio published into 1991 with the Gallimard editions. This novel written in the wake of a Joseph Conrad mixes three dreams and three revolts in the middle of Africa, of Africa become impossible for these three Westerners who lose each one in their turn idyllic Africa that they had built each one with his manner. One can certainly with this novel hold a vision of the town of Onitsha the shortly after the second world war before the decolonization of the Nigeria. The final chapter refers to the war of the Biafra.
