Onias III

See also: Onias

The large priest Onias III, wire of Simon II, deposited in -175, was the last of the legitimate priests Sadocite S (his/her Jason brother, for Jesus, imposed by Antiochos IV, was only one usurper). However the Esséniens were always claimed of their fidelity with Sadoq (large priest of Solomon and thus first large priest, in date, of the Temple) and with their successors. The Oniades, indeed, were the last of the known sadocites. (The assumption of Emile Puech, and others, that Oniades had exerted the sovereign pontificate of -159 with -152, period for which the name of the large priest remains unknown, so even it there had one, is arbitrary of them. Furthermore, Jonathan which would have évincés them into -152 could not be regarded as an impious priest, even on behalf of the esséniens, which were rather favorable to the insurrection maccabéenne. Moreover a praise of the king Jonathan, found among the Handwritten of Qumrân (4Q448), does not go at all in the direction of this thesis, so even it does not cancel it completely.)

  • the priest Onias III underwent persecution and the exile, as it is known as with insistence of the Master of justice.

  • the priest Onias III was assassinated “in its residence of exile” (in 170), at the instigation of an impious priest (Ménélas), as it is known as of the Master of justice.
