Onet-the-Castle

Onet-the-Castle is a common French, located in the department of the Aveyron and the area the Midday-Pyrenees. It is, from its size, the common fourth behind Rodez, Millau and Villefranche-with-Rouergue. Its inhabitants, called Castonétois, passed from 1.200 to 10.500 inhabitants in 50 years.

Geography

Onet-the-Castle belongs to the eight communes of the Communauté of agglomeration of Large Rodez. With its 40 km ² of surface, it is largest of its community of aggglomeration. It is almost as large as Albi which counts 50.000 inhabitants.

Common which extends from Capelle (village more in the west) with the Rocket (village more in the east) on 12 kilometers. It is bordered in north by Vabre and its castle, in the south by the Four Seasons (zone densément populated) and in the east by the hill of the Peaks, zone all in length which extends of the Rocket in Oustal Nau.

History

Territory belonging to the County of Rodez, the prosperity of this territory starts in 1589 when the county is attached to the crown of France.

Before the Revolution, the current territory was cut out in three parishes:

Saint-Mayme
Limouze (current village of Onet)
Saint Martin's day de Limouze (600 inhabitants in 1771)

It is one very poor period, Saint-Mayme will count to 27 beggars as Limouze which will count 15 of them.

After the Revolution, the commune of Onet-the-Castle was created. But this name will point out very quickly the Ancien Mode. The commune will be famous Onet-the-Mountain in homage to the Montagnards. It changed name under the Empire to be called Onet-the-Plain, then becomes again Onet-the-Castle with the Restauration.

Small rural district in 1960, it passed today to one as of its great agglomerations of suburbs where the HLM and the houses are côtoient. Its rise is due to the proximity of Rodez (prefecture of the Aveyron) constituting an economic advancement (zone of activity, leisures), this commune has the two greater shopping malls of the department, the postal advantageous road equipment and sorting office.

Onet-the-castle has beautiful being a new city which accommodates the surplus of inhabitants Ruthénois, it knew to preserve an inheritance châtelin. Heritage of the insecurity of the the Middle Ages or demonstration of richness of their owners, the common one does not count less than 25 castles.

Castle of the old village : During the 16th century, the castle of the old village, going back to 1200 was rebuilt. The canons of the chapter of the cathedral of Rodez placed there in summer as at the time of the epidemics which threatened the city.
the Vault Castrale : Gothic vault, located inside the castle, it did not comprise an external access, for safety reasons. It is only at the 19th century that were added two side chapels and an external access east coast.
the parish : It included/understood, in 1787, 215 inhabitants divided between the village, Bertandie, Cayroulie, Campie, Landerie, Limouze, Onrazac, Praderie, Trauc and the Cheating.
