Oneraria

The Navis Oneraria ( stroggulh nauV , ploion fortikon ) was a Bateau Romain used to accompany a fleet, or like trading vessel to transport food products, goods, any species of freight. It measured from 20 to 30 meters from length and 8 to 10 broad on average. The Romans measured the capacity of its boats in Amphore, the found wrecks of oneraria had an average capacity from 3000 to 4000 amphoras.

Description

It was a ship heavily built, with round skittle, and in general decked from one end to another, without point armed with iron ( rostrum ) to front, and always laid out to go only to the veil, without oars nor oars. The ship was often decorated of a figurehead in the shape of swan. Behind the poop, it is a tent which was used as shelter to the pilot ( gubernator ). In the middle of the bridge, the mainmast ( malus ) rose which supported the principal sail, of rectangular or trapezoidal form. In front of the ship another sail, smaller, named was Artimon. It is estimated that its boats had a speed of 5 Nœuds.
