On the wings of the song (original title: One Wings off Song ) is a novel of Thomas Mr. Disch published in 1979. This work was named for the Prix Hugo better novel in 1980.
Synopsis
In the near future, the American farm States such as the Iowa, where young Daniel Weinreb saw, evolved to a form of totalitarianism and puritanism repressing any form of creativity. The only loophole in this choking world, is the flight, particular technique which makes it possible thanks to the song to escape from its body in a kind of astral Voyage. Few people manage to acquire this technique which is also very dangerous because it happens that one never returns from his voyage. In spite of the risk, Daniel Weinreb, who has just been dispatched in a concentration camp to have sold the newspaper of a Neighboring state, only dreams to arrive finally to envoler.
By a happy reversal of the fate, Daniel Weinreb marries in his coming out of prison, Bodicée, the girl of the richest man of Iowa. But the dream breaks as of the wedding night when Bodicée, which learned how to fly does not return from its voyage. Exiled in New York in full economic recession, Daniel Weinreb then saw expédients in the medium of the opera and the castrati and ends up becoming the nice one of a Master of Bel canto before finding his way finally.
