Onésime Recluse

Onésime Recluse , born with Orthez the March 7th 1837 and dead the June 30th 1916, is a geographer French, inventor of the word Francophonie.

It is born in a Protestant family from Béarn, of a father Pasteur, Jacques Reclus. This geographer is the inventor of the word francophonie about 1886 in his work France, Algérie and colonies . He defines in a militancy of the French colonial expansion the French-speaking people as “all those which are or seem to be intended to remain or to become participating of our language”.

Onésime Reclus is the brother, inter alia, of the geographer Elisee Reclus and the journalist Élie Reclus.
