OmegaTĀ® is a translation memory, i.e. a software which records equivalences between the languages. Written in the computer programming language Java, it is free and is currently developed by OmegaT Project, a group of translators and programmers independent. It does not use an intermediate format (XLIFF or PO) and authorizes the direct translation of the formats which it accepts (see documentation). Accept the standard of Translation memory TMX.

Operation of the software

The user places his documents sources, translation memory and glossaries which it has in specific files the project to translate. When a project is opened, OmegaT extracted the text for translation recognized documents. As the user translates each segment, OmegaT adds the text translated to translation memory. OmegaT created with final the target documents by amalgamating translation memory with the documents sources.

During the translation of a segment, the correspondences in translation memory and the glossaries are posted in an adjacent window. With these correspondences are dependant a percentage of resemblance. More the number approaches 100% plus the segment is identical to an already known element. These translations can be inserted in the project thanks to the specified short cuts.

The user can pass to another file of the project by the window " Files of Projet" but can also make a scan for words on all the project and translation memory. The function of validation of the beacons makes it possible to check that there no were errors on the beacons.

To be able to add or modify with the project of the documents sources, of translation memory or the glossaries the user must reload the project so that OmegaT recognize the new segments. The same so of the modifications on the rules of segmentation are carried out the project must be reloaded.

Collaborations

OmegaWiki is a project under development of which one of the goal is to bind OmegaT to the databases that it constitutes. This bond will make it possible to export and redistribute in OmegaWiki the segments recorded by OmegaT.
