Omar Aga

Omar Aga was Dey of Algiers of April 1815 at September 1817, following the assassination of its predecessor Mohamed Kharnadji.

Following attacks of barbaresque corsairs on American ships, a forwarding of the US Navy, directed by Commodore Stephen Decatur with the head of a squadron of nine ships, is carried out in 1815 against the Regency of Algiers. The episode is known under the name of Second war of Cruelty. The operation forces the dey Omar to sign a fine treaty putting at the exactions, treaty that he denounces little time besides afterwards. The Congrès of Vienna which was concentrated on the problem of the Christian slaves resulting from barbaresque piracy charges the the United Kingdom with making hear reason with the dey d' Alger and the beys of Tunis and Tripoli.

If these two last are shown reconciling, it is not the same for Omar Aga. One needs the bombardment of Algiers on August 27th 1816 by the Anglo-Dutch squadron ordered by the British admiral Lord Exmouth to bring the bey to the reason. But in spite of the signature of a treaty and the release of 3000 European slaves, that is little of effect since the Congress of Aachen again mentions the same problem in 1818.
