Olympic stadium (Amsterdam)
The architect Jan Wils built the Olympic stadium of Amsterdam (in Dutch: ) at the time of the Plays of Amsterdam in 1928.
It had a capacity of 34.000 places during its inauguration, but this one was carried in 64.000 places in 1937 thanks to the addition of a second stage of platforms.
After the plays it accommodated many sporting tests, including the departure of the Tour de France cyclist 1954. As from 1995 the Olympic stadium sheltered the team of American football Des. proceeded there the same year, and on this occasion German of took the best on Admirals under the eyes of 23.000 spectators.
Football (soccer) remained despite everything the principal activity and the Olympic stadium sheltered two clubs, and the BVC Amsterdam (then).
Until the construction of its new enclosure, the Amsterdam Arena, in 1996, the Ajax Amsterdam played its most important matches with the Olympic stadium, because of the low capacity of the stage De Meer, which moreover did not have immediately a lighting system allowing the organization of matches into night.
After the departure of Ajax the second stage of platform was demolished and the stage found its configuration of origin. It was magnificiently restored and again opened its doors in May 2000.
