Genesis

According to Andre Gascard, former player, trainer and directing before becoming archivist of the OM, the club omnisport of Olympic of Marseilles was founded in 1892, although its current name was adopted in 1899 (before it was called Football-Club of Marseilles starting from 1897, heir to Sporting Club and US Phocéenne). At the beginnings of the general sports club, the sport high-speed motorboat was the Rugby, it is at this time that the currency of the club Droit to the goal took its origin. Affiliated to USFSA since 1898, football is applied thanks to the German impulse of English and truly starting from 1902. Of all the football clubs of the Marseilles city , the OM thanks to its organization and its budget quickly becomes the club headlight of the city (relegating Sporting, the Stage or Phocéenne with the plane second) and evolves/moves with the Stade of Huveaune.

In 1904, the OM gains its first championship of the littoral (concerning the clubs of Marseilles and its suburbs) and takes part in the final stages of the eleventh championship of France. At that time, the term “Association” is generally employed while the word “football” indicated mainly Rugby, in particular in province.

First national victories

It is starting from the Années 1920 that the Olympic one of Marseilles is made a fame on the national plan by gaining with three recoveries the Coupe de France in 1924, 1926 and 1927 becoming thus the first club of province to allocate this trophy and in 1929 gains the championship of France amateurs against the French Club (the professional championship such as there exists today was created in 1932). It is undoubtedly as from this moment that the Paris-Marseilles competition took its first steps.

At the beginnings of the Years 1930, the OM continues on its successes, is essential in the South-eastern Championship and is devoted to great meetings vis-a-vis the other large club of the area: FC Sète. All these successes make it possible the OM to adhere to the grouping professional clubs and to integrate new the professional Championnat of France created in 1932. Beginning 1932 and this because of its new statute, the OM redefines all its organization by naming a president, a general secretary and a treasurer inter alia.

The OM enters the era of professionalism

This national championship is divided into two hens, the OM will finish second of its hen behind the future champion of France, the Olympique Inhabitant of Lille, although they beat them in match of opening.

The supporters await 1937 to see the OM finally gaining its very first championship of France, this thanks to a better difference in goals with respect to FC Sochaux (+30 against +17). Meanwhile, the OM successfully assumes its reputation of “club of cut” by gaining again the Coupe de France in 1935 and 1938, team which is reinforced by the arrival of the Brazilian Vasconcellos and the Marocain Larbi Ben Barek (called the “black pearl”) in spite of the departure of her guard Di Lorto for the FC Sochaux.

The Years 1940

Football continues in spite of the Second world war, in 1943 the OM establishes many records in the championship of France, first of all it registers 100 goals during this season (including 20 during a match against Avignon on the score of 20-2 and where Emmanuel Aznar registered 8 goals), and gains for the fifth time the Coupe de France against the Girondins of Bordeaux 4-0, this thanks to a good generation of footballers (Roger Scotti, Georges Dard, etc).

In 1948, the OM becomes again champion of France, eleven years after the last title, thanks to a tie obtained in the last moments of a match against the FC Sochaux and two successes against Roubaix (6-0) and FC Metz (6-3).

The Years 1950 and first descent

In 1952, the OM escapes from little from relegation grace in particular to its striker Swedish Gunnar Andersson (which will finish better striker of this championship) and succeeds in saving its place during the stoppings against the Valencian FC where the OM loses 3-1 with the match outward journey before being essential 4-0 on the return match. The OM will receive also this season a true lesson of football of the ACE Saint-Etienne, come to impose itself on Marseilles 10-3.

In 1953, Gunnar Andersson preserves its title of better striker by registering 35 goals, then the OM arrives twice finally of a competition, that of the Coupe de France in 1954 (lost 2-1 against OGC Nice) and that of the Coupe Drago in 1957 (lost 3-1 against RC Lens).

In spite of its blows of glares out of cuts, the OM goes down for the first time from its history in the second division in 1959, before going up in 1962 but finishes last and goes down again in 1963.

1965: arrival of Marcel Leclerc

Marcel Leclerc, native of Marseilles, decide to then take again the head of the club in 1965 in the second division and Mario Zatelli, arrived one year before occupies the post of trainer. Gradually, its ambition makes it possible the Marseilles club to gain its sixth cut of France in 1969 and the championship of the first division in 1971 with a duet of attackers made up of Josip Skoblar and Roger Magnusson.

In 1972, the OM builds for the first time of its history doubled the championship-cut, and takes part for the first time in the Coupe of Europe of the clubs champions, but is eliminated first once by the Ajax Amsterdam from Johan Cruyff then by the Juventus of Turin.

This period remains anchored in the Marseilles collective memory, in particular characterized by its president Leclerc who allowed him to give again titles with a club in lose speed. It is under its era that the Marseilles public was likely to be able to see evolving/moving Josip Skoblar, Roger Magnusson, Jean Djorkaeff and Jules Zvunka. But Marcel Leclerc will be constrained to resign in 1972.

After-Leclerc is badly digested

After the departure of its president and this in spite of a new championship victory of France in 1976, the club goes down in championship on the lower floor in 1980.

In the Second division, the direction of the club decides to follow a policy of promotion of the young people who will integrate the team first. These young players resulting from the club will be called the Minots and allowed in 1984 the club to find its place in the elite.

1986 - 1994: Tapie with the orders

Arrived on the initiative of the mayor of Marseilles, Gaston Defferre running 1986, the business man Bernard Tapie takes the reins of the club with a firm intention: to gain the Cut of Europe. It is at the origin of the most glorious page of the history of the club.

These years are characterized by many changes of team-type and trainers. On its arrival, it engages Karl-Heinz Förster, which had disputed two world cups within the team of Germany, and Alain Giresse, torn off with the rivals of Bordeaux. In other words, Tapie gives itself of entry the means of its ambitions. Year after year, the team is modified and improved in order to be more powerful.

The Tapie era sees following one another of the players such as Jean-Pierre Papin, Chris Waddle, Klaus Allofs, Enzo Francescoli, Abedi Pelé, Didier Deschamps, Basile Boli, Marcel Desailly, Rudi Völler or Eric Cantona and of the trainers of great talent such as Franz Beckenbauer, Gerard Gili or Raymond Goethals. Under its presidency, the club gains 4 championships of France (1989-1990-1991-1992) and a cut of France (1989) but especially the very prestigious Ligue of the Champions 1993 after having failed finally in 1991. It leaves the club in 1994 following the Affaire OM-VA.

Business OM-VA and consequences

Following the Business OM-VA, the federal council withdraws the championship of France 1993 to the OM and retrogresses the club in the second division. The UEFA excludes Marseilles from the European competition 1993/1994 and the FIFA withdraws with the OM the right to play the Intercontinentale cut.

Marseilles finishes 2nd championship in 1994 with the emergence of a large player who will mark the championship of France, Sony Anderson. But the federal council retrogresses the OM in D2.

After brilliant a first year in D2, the OM finished in the first place of the classification (grace in particular to DeWolf, Cascarino and Ferreri), but the club files for bankruptcy and remains one year more in D2.

This year was harder with a difficult departure, but the second place is acquired on the end of the season. The OM was going again to taste in D1 in 1996-1997.

Arrival of Robert-Louis Dreyfus

Roland Courbis is named trainer of the OM in 1997 by the new president Robert Louis-Dreyfus. He makes sign Laurent Blanc, Andreas Köpke and Fabrizio Ravanelli, which makes it possible the club to find the UEFA Cup thanks to obtaining the fourth place in championship, better performance of the club since the increase. At the time of the season 1998-1999, the OM celebrates its centenary, and for this occasion the club invests in many players of talents: Robert Worse, Florian Maurice and Christophe Dugarry. With this team of stars, the OM arrives at the second place of the championship at the conclusion of a sprint final against Bordeaux and reached the final of the UEFA Cup which it loses against the Parma AC. Courbis leaves the Olympic one of Marseilles in November 1999 victim of a missed beginning of the season replaced by Bernard Casoni.

At the time of the three following seasons, the OM had evil to be stabilized, many players leave and several trainers follow one another, the OM comes very close to relegation twice finishing in the fifteenth place in 2000 and 2001. In 2002, Alain Perrin arrives and makes it possible the club to rise in top of the classification, managing even to qualify itself for the Ligue of the Champions. But it leaves during elimination to the first turn against FC Oporto (future winner) and the Real Madrid. The OM carries on its road out of cut of the UEFA and, grace in particular to Didier Drogba, arrives finally of the competition after having eliminated Newcastle United, the Inter Milan and Liverpool FC. But the Valence CF beats them 2-0. Left Drogba with Chelsea FC, the club knows many changes in its manpower but will be able to reach better only one fifth place in championship in 2005 and 2006, on the other hand the club succeeds in arriving finally of the cut of France which it loses against Paris-SG 2-1 in 2006. It is at the time of this season that a player manages to emerge on the international plan: Franck Ribéry, which becomes during the titular world cup in team of France. For the season 2006 - 2007, Albert Emon which preaches the offensive play becomes the trainer and the club counts the arrivals of Djibril Cissé or Ronald Zubar. The OM finds the top of the classification and replaces vice-champion (better performance since 1999) behind the Olympique Lyonese and disputes a new final of cut of France which it loses with the shootings with the goals against FC Sochaux. This season is marked by the blossoming of Samir Nasri at the sides of Ribéry, Cissé and Niang. The mercato of summer 2007 is marked by the arrival of many players like Karim Ziani, Boudewijn Zenden, André Ayew, Matt Moussilou, Steve Mandanda, Laurent Bonnart, Jacques Faty, Benoît Cheyrou and by the rehabilitation of the occupational class of Fabrice Fiorèse. But at the time of this mercato the OM loses many its players tallies, in particular Franck Ribéry, Toifilou Maoulida, Mickaël Pagis and Habib Beye.

Historical personalities of the club

Players emblematic

Throughout its history, the Olympic one of Marseilles had large players who for the majority also knew the honor to be international.

As of the Years 1920, large players marked the club such as the offensive trio recruited on Paris Jean Boyer (first international Marseillais in 1923), Edouard Crut and Jules Devaquez, with players of the vintage like Jean Cabassu or Raymond Durand which made it possible the club to gain three cuts of France and once the championship amateur.

The Years 1930, with the arrival of professionalism, see the appearance under the colors phocéennes of the guard Brésil IEN Vasconcellos, of the black pearl Morocco groin Larbi Ben Barek, Willy Kohut, Emmanuel Aznar, Mario Zatelli and Joseph Alcazar. They gain the first professional championship of the club in 1936 and two cuts of France.

After the interruption which had by the war, the Années 1950 are difficult for the OM, however the Swede Gunnar Andersson piles up the goals (170 goals in championship in 7 years) and the club can count on the return of Ben Barek.

It is necessary to await the arrival of Leclerc and the increase of the club in the first division so that the club finds colors. André Tassone takes part in the revival of the club. Starting from 1967, new players are retained in national selection like the captain Jean Djorkaeff or Marcel Artelesa, in 1968 arrives the Swede Roger Magnusson who initially constituted a frightening duet of attackers with Yegba Maya Joseph and especially Josip Skoblar in the second time starting from 1970, this last beating the record of goals in one season (44 goals in 1971). The duel between the OM and Saint-Etienne increased when Georges Carnus and Bernard Bosquier leaves the greens for Canebière. All together, they make it possible the OM to twice gain the championship including one doubled in 1972.

The following year, Salif Keita replaces Magnusson and Marius Trésor appears but the club, unstable, does not gain a title. In 1974, the Brazilian world champions 1970 Jairzinho and Paulo César rejoignèrent the club and ignite the Cycle-racing track during one year before leaving and being replaced by the Argentin Hector Yazalde assisted by Albert Emon and Saar Boubacar.

After that, the OM marks time and becomes irregular: rare are the players to emerge, note the passages of international such as Anders Linderoth or of Didier Six.

It is with the arrival of Tapie that the OM joins again its history with the large players with the arrivals in brass band of Alain Giresse, Jean-François Domergue, Bernard Genghini, Karl-Heinz Förster and especially of the gunner Jean-Pierre Papin (five times better striker consecutively of the championship). Year by year, manpower improves: Klaus Allofs, Franck Sauzée, Carlos Mozer, Enzo Francescoli, Eric Confined and Chris Waddle follows one another, this first vintage will be symbolized unfortunately by a lost final with Bari out of Cut of Europe.

The following season begins a renewal of manpower, remain with the club in 1992 Abedi Pelé, Basile Boli, Manuel Amoros, Eric Di Meco and Sauzée, the others being replaced by the world champion 1990 Rudi Völler, Alen Boksic, Didier Deschamps, Marcel Desailly and Fabien Barthez. It is with this team that the OM takes down its more beautiful title: cut of Europe thanks to a head of Boli. But business OM-VA bursts and good number of its frameworks only leave, emergent Brazilian the Sony Anderson or Dragan Stojkovic which from went away in 1994 at the time of retrogradation.

Gone up in D1 in 1996 after two years in D2 (where Tony Cascarino managed to become better striker of division twice), the club very quickly seeks to obtain a good manpower, arrive then Andreas Köpke and Xavier Gravelaine then William Gallas, Laurent Blanc, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Christophe Dugarry and Claude Makélélé in 1997 and finally Robert Pirès and Florian Maurice in 1998, the club finds quickly the tops with as not organ 1999 where the club is vice champion and finalist of Cut UEFA, but the club falls down quickly in its through because of its chronic instability.

In the Years 2000, the OM makes it possible certain players to appear like Didier Drogba, Daniel van Buyten or Camel Meriem, helped well by the return the old ones like Franck Leboeuf or Fabien Barthez, they disputed a final of cut of the UEFA in 2004, lost again against Valence CF After the departure of Drogba, the club stagnates and it is in 2005 and the arrival of Franck Ribéry that it starts to hope, with other reinforcements like Mamadou Niang, Taye Taiwo and Sabri Lamouchi, team reinforced the year following by the emergence of Samir Nasri and Cédric Carrasso and the arrivals of Djibril Cissé and Lorik Cana then Julien Rodriguez with the mercato of winter, allowing the club to find the League of the Champions in 2007.
