The Handball is a discipline with the Olympic Games since the Jeux of Berlin in 1936 for the male teams, and the Jeux of Montreal in 1976 for the female teams.

Facts & figures

  • With the Olympic Games of summer of 1936, the Olympic tournament of handball was played in the open air.

  • In 1976, the Soviet Union gains the tournament as well at the men, as at the ladies. She will be imitated by the Yugoslavia in 1984.
  • In 1980, the female team of Soviet Union is the first to preserve its title. She will be imitated in 1992 (under the name of unified Équipe) by her counterpart male.
  • the female tournament of the Jeux of Los Angeles (1984) sees for the first time a non-European country going up on the podium: the South Korea (money) and the China (bronzes).
  • South Korea is the only non-European country with being gone up on the podium of the male tournament (1988).
  • the first Olympic title for a non-European country is gained by the South Korea in the female tournament 1988.
  • In 1992, the podium of the female tournament is exactly the same one as at the time of the preceding Olympiad. So the Norway becomes the first team to lose two finales of at a stretch.
  • In 2000, the male team of Sweden becomes the first to lose three finales of continuation. The Russian guard Andrej Lavrov becomes the first handballer with being crowned three times Olympic champion.
  • the record of 8 medals acquired by the unified Équipe (ex- the USSR) will hold at least until the Olympic Games of 2012.
  • the female team of Denmark is the first to gain the Olympic title three times of sharp (of 1996 to 2004).
