Olympic Sports

The Olympic Sport S gather all the disciplines with the program of the Olympic Games of summer and winter . Current the Olympic program is composed of 35 sports, 53 disciplines and more than 400 tests. The Olympic Games of summer include/understand 28 sports (and 38 disciplines) and those of winter 7 sports (and 15 disciplines).

Each Olympic sport depends on its Official Authority, namely a International federation.

The International Olympic committee (CIO) establishes a hierarchy of the sports, disciplines, and tests. According to this hierarchy, the Olympic sport can be subdivided in several disciplines, which are often supposed to be distinct from the sports. For example, the Swimming and the Water polo (disciplines of swimming, represented by the International federation of swimming), or the Figure skating and the Speed skating (disciplines of ice-skating, represented by the International union of ice-skating).

A sport or a discipline is included in the Olympic program, if CIO decides that it is largely practiced in the world. Indeed, a discipline will have to be practiced by the men in at least fifty countries and out of three continents, and by the women in at least thirty-five countries distributed on three continents.

Certain sports were withdrawn from the Olympic program, following the example Polo or Tir with the cord. Others such as the Shooting with the arc or the Tennis were abandoned at the beginning of the plays but reintroduced in the program Olympic several years afterwards.

Sports of demonstration often were included in the Olympic Games in order to measure their interest and their supports, but also in order to promote a local sport of the organizing country. Some of these disciplines were recognized official thereafter, like the Baseball in 1992 or the Curling in 1998.
