On these sites, will be held over 18 days of competition, 302 tests in 28 sports declined in 38 discipines, which represents 623 sessions of competition in all. The architectural philosopher's stones are the national Stade of Beijing " nest of oiseau" , and the Olympic swimming pool " cubic of eau" , constuits side by side, the national Gymnasium, the Olympic village, and the Arts center and sporting of Wukesong.

More than 300.000 houses were demolished and their inhabitants rehoused around Beijing for the preparation of the plays. The Pekinese police force apprehended a good number of inhabitants to have protested against expulsions.

CIO announced the July 8th 2005 that the equestrian tests will be held with HongKong.

Weather

Heat and an high rate of moisture (77%) reigns on Beijing in August. The average of precipitations is 12 days over the month. They are sometimes violent. Fearing a watering at the worst time (on August 8th, 2008, day of the opening ceremony, for example), the Chinese authorities developed a system consisting in drawing in the clouds using rockets faggots from chemicals in order to make rain… at another place, thus cutting the " route" of a possible depression.

The other main issue to which the athletes will have to face is pollution, intense with Beijing, surrounded by six peripherals, and where, these last years, of the million cars the million bicycles replaced. There too, the authorities promised to act, on the one hand by limiting drastiquement the circulation (a test was made in August 2007 while authorizing to roll in alternation only the vehicles whose number plate ended in an even/odd number), on the other hand by stopping the production of the most polluting factories of the surroundings and finally, while having completed the very many building sites which in this city, do not relate to only the Olympic Games…

After the Olympic Games of summer of 2004, the only sovereign nations not to have never contributed to this event were the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu and the the Vatican. The Marshall Islands are affiliated with the International Olympic committee since February 2006 and plan to take part in the plays. With regard to Tuvalu, the 119ème session of the CIO in 2007 also accepted the presence of this microphone-nation within the committee and its participation in 2008.

Since 2006, the Montenegro (associate also recently with the CIO) and the Serbia are sovereign and independent nations. They will take part under their clean Drapeau in the Olympic Games.

The North Korea and the South Korea plan to send a team common at the time of these plays to Beijing. For this reason, the representatives of the two Olympic committees, in an interview with the president of CIO Jacques Rogge the September 5th 2006, discussed this possibility. In the past both Korea ravelled under the same banner at the time of the opening ceremonies, but never contributed together. Fault of agreement on the representation of the Athlete S of the two nations, the discussion was pushed back later on.

Controversies and threats of boycott

Mobilized for several months, of many organizations with the Boycott Olympic Games of Beijing have called, pretexting that the Popular republic of China does not respect the human rights in its country, have an aggressive foreign politics towards the Tibet and that many Olympic sites are strongly threatened by pollution.

Human rights

August 1st CIO believed that the plays would improve the statute of the ethnic minorities, political and religious. However, few concrete signs show a peaceful opening, which it is about the Tibet, of the Xinjiang of the patriotic Associations, the free elections or the human rights in general.

According to association Reporters without borders, hundred journalists, Net surfers and militants of freedom of expression are currently held in China popular, while Internet remains censured (Wikipédia, for example, is not accessible) by authorities which regularly continue to block or close sites, while tracking the Net surfers " dissidents" via their IP addresses

According to Amnesty International, in an official statement diffused on April 30th, 2007, “In spite of important reforms of the system related to the capital punishment and new rules for the foreign journalists in China, the country hardly seems to progress in other fields relating to the human rights and the Olympic Games; moreover, the repression of the militants of the human rights and the Chinese journalists intensifies”
