Olympic Games of summer of 2000

The Olympic Games of summer of 2000 , Plays of XXVIIe Olympiad of the modern era, were held with Sydney (News-Wales of the South, Australia) of the September 15th to the 1 {{er}} October 2000. 199 nations were present is 10.651 athletes (6582 men and 4069 women). 300 gold medals were distributed.

Designation of the host city

The September 23rd 1993 with Monte Carlo, during the 101 session of C.I.O, Sydney was preferably selected with the cities following candidates: Berlin, Istanbul, Manchester and Beijing.

The Olympique park of Homebush Bay , located near the downtown area of Sydney gathered 14 sports. No important problem of organization was noted, in particular with regard to the transport of the spectators.

Ceremonies

Cathy Freeman, Australia in the indigenous beginnings , lit the Olympic flame. It was selected like symbol of the will of reconciliation between the Aboriginals and the descendants of the European migrants. It gained the gold medal of the race of 400 meters.
