- the Soviet Union and Israel take part for the first time in the Plays. The Plays of Helsinki inaugurate the era of the sporting diplomacy between blocks of the Cold war.
- the Germany and the Japan find the Olympic Games.
- In 1924, Bill Havens had been selected to represent the United States in oar in the eight with cox, but he refused in order to remain close to his pregnant wife of their first child. Twenty-eight years later, the child in question, Frank Havens, gained the gold medal in the 10 000m in the single-seat canoe.
- on July 22nd, the Yugoslavia beats the Soviet Union 3 to 1, whereas the relations between Tito and Stalin were tended: the match will be perceived by the Yugoslavians like a victory of Titoism over Stalinism.
