The Olympic Games of summer of 1928 , Plays of IXe Olympiad of the modern era, were celebrated with Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Organization

• For the first time, one lights the Olympic basin.
• the firm of Atlanta, Coca-Cola floods the Plays with its famous drink. It will not leave any more the Plays.
• First use of film of arrival or stopwatch-cinema. This one will be generalized at the time of the Olympic Games of summer of 1932.

Striking facts

• For the first time, the women take part the proof Athlétisme (100 m, 800 m, 4 X 100 m, high jump and disc).
• the Tennis suspected of professionalism disappears from the Olympic Games.
• the French delegation refuses to take part in the opening ceremony because of an incident little before the latter. The team of France of athletics saw itself refusing the access to the Olympic stadium to involve itself there whereas the Germans had been entitled to this favor. This incident was interprêté by the French like germanophile and francophobe. It acted in fact of a guard of particularly blunt stage…

• Johnny Weissmuller preserves its titles on 100 meters freestyle, 400 meters freestyle, 4 X 200 meters freestyle.

• Ahmed Boughéra El Ouafi, French of Algerian origin, creates the surprise by gaining the marathon.
• Lucien Gaudin gains the tests of foil and sword.
• the Finnish wheels continue their domination on the bottom and medium-distance race.
• Percy Williams realizes doubled on 100 and 200 meters.
