The Olympic Games of summer are a multidisciplinary international sports event which is held every 4 years, and which is supervised by the International Olympic committee. It is about the most prestigious sporting event in the world. An Olympic victory is often recognized as being the absolute sporting exploit. Medals reward the athletes with each edition, gold medal for the winners, of money for the seconds and bronze for the third of each discipline.
The first Plays proposed 42 disciplines initially and joined together less than 250 men on the whole, when next the Olympic Games of summer of 2008, who will be held with Beijing, accommodates nearly 10.500 athletes resulting from 202 nations and convergent in 302 disciplines.
The athletes represent their country or the country of which they have nationality. The national anthems and the Drapeau X of the country represented by each victorious athlete accompany the ceremonies by handing-over of the medals.
In general only the recognized nations are represented, but some countries whose legitimacy is disputed are authorized to take part. CIO required for example of the République of China (Taiwan, not to confuse with the Popular republic of China) to take part under the name " " Chinese Taipei " in order to prevent that the Popular republic of China does not feel offended.
History
The November 25th 1892, whereas the French general sports federation USFSA festival its fifth birthday in the large amphitheater of the Sorbonne to Paris, Pierre de Coubertin calls with the restoration of the Olympic Games.
Two years later, the June 23rd 1894, was held with the Sorbonne the “Congress for the re-establishment of the Olympic Games”. In front of the absence of reactions to its call to the restoration of the Olympic Games two years earlier, Pierre de Coubertin then manages to convince the England, the the United States, but also the Jamaica, the New Zealand or the Sweden in particular. More than 2000 people representing twelve nations finally attend the congress, which votes the restoration of the Olympic Games unanimously. Another important decision made at the time of this congress is the judgment of the sporting payments of certain federations (English in particular) excluding the workmen and the craftsmen in the name of a social elitism which went against the French levelling ideals.
Rules of qualification
The rules of qualification of each Olympic sport are fixed by the International federations which govern international competitions of the known as sport.
For the individual sports, the athletes are often qualified after having carried out certain performances in an international competition, or while being sufficiently well classified in the classification (if classification it there a) of the federation concerned. The Olympic National committees can propose a number limited athletes for each discipline (3 in general), and decide athletes to present if the quota of qualified maximum were exceeded. One sees thus in a certain number of disciplines of the athletes resulting from country in the process of development having a relatively low level.
The nations qualify their teams for the sports of team while passing by continental tournaments of qualifications, which offer according to the continent a certain number of places. The team of the country host is generally described as office.
