A Olympic anthem composed by Spyros Samaras (music) and Kostís Palamás (words) was played for the first time at the time of the Jeux of I {{Re}} Olympiade with Athens in 1896. Thereafter, various musical compositions decorated the opening ceremonies until the Jeux of Rome in 1960, date on which the composition of Samaras/Palamás became the official Olympic anthem (decision taken by the Session of the International Olympic committee in 1958).
The Olympic anthem is used as anthem for the winners with the Olympic Games under certain conditions:
APXAIO ΠNEYMA
Αρχαίο Πνεύμ' αθάνατο, αγνέ πατέρα
Στο δρόμο και στο πάλεμα και στο λιθάρι,
Κάμποι, βουνά και θάλασσες φέγγουν μαζί σου
Sto dhrómo ke sto pálema ke sto lithári,
Kámpi vouná ke thálasses féngoun mazí penny
