Olympiad of failures of 2004

The Olympiade of failures of 2004 is a world competition by teams and country organized by FIDE. The countries clash on 4 chess-boards per team of 6 players (4 holders and 2 substitutes. The female teams have 4 players out of 3 chess-boards.

This 36e Olympiade was held from October 14th to 30th 2004 with Calvia, seaside resort of the island of Majorque in Spain.

The points are not allotted taking into consideration result of the matches inter-nations, but according to the individual results on each chess-board (a point by gained part, half-time for null, zero point for a defeat).

Male tournament

Context

This Olympiad joins together 127 nations, plus the teams of Spain B and C.

The competition proceeds in single hen on 14 rounds according to the Swiss Système.

The closing ceremony is sullied with an serious incident opposing the Spanish police force to the vice-president of the FIDE, the géorgien Azmaïparashvili placed as a police custody during 48 hours.

Results

France is classified 23e with 31,5 points.

After a long domination of the Olympiads, Russia is beaten by a young team of Ukraine (22 years of average age). It saves the second place vis-a-vis Arménie only of one point to the Buchholz (460 to 459).

  • For the Ukraine: Ivanchuk, Ponomariov, Volokytin, Maiseenko, Eljanov, Karjakin.
  • For Russia: Morozevich, Svidler, Grischuk, Dreev, Khalifman, Zviagintsev.
  • For Arménie: Akopian, Aronian, Vaganian, Lputian, Sargissian, Minasian.
  • For France: Lautier, Fressinet, Dorfman, Nataf, Degraeve, Fountain.

88 nations take part, plus the team of Spain B.

The competition proceeds in single hen on 14 rounds according to the Swiss Système.

Georgia beaten with decides between by Russia returns in the row and precedes France which finishes 5th with 25,5 points. It is by far the best performance of the team since the creation of the Olympiads (male performance including). The Chinese team crushes the competition. She has 6 points in advance after the 9th round and can allow herself to finish in free wheel.
