Olympiad of failures of 1998
The Olympiade of failures of 1998 is a world competition by teams and country organized by FIDE. The countries clash on 4 chess-boards per team of 6 players (4 holders and 2 substitutes. The female teams have 4 players out of 3 chess-boards.
This 33e Olympiade was held from September 26th to October 13rd, 1998 with Elista, capital of the Russian autonomous republic of Kalmoukie whose president Ilioumjinov is also president of the FIDE.
The building intended to accommodate the demonstration is not delivered the day of opening and the competition starts with two days of delay. the FIDE then decides to remove the last round. The competition is also disturbed by insinuations, nonfounded, of a participation of Ilioumjinov in the assassination of the journalist Larissa Youdina, director of the single newspaper of opposition and whose body had been found a few months ago.
The points are not allotted taking into consideration result of the matches inter-nations, but according to the individual results on each chess-board (a point by gained part, half-time for null, zero point for a defeat).

Context
This Olympiad joins together 107 nations, to which are added the teams B, C and D of Russia, both last representative makes Kalmoukie of it. It is necessary to note the absence in the Russian team of the three best players: Kasparov, Karpov and Kramnik.The competition proceeds in single hen on 14 rounds (13 in fact) according to the Swiss Système.
Results
France is classified 26e with 28,5 points.
The Ukraine takes the bronze medal thanks to the system of decides between buchholz.

Female tournament
70 nations are present, plus the teams of Russia B and CThe competition proceeds in single hen on 14 rounds (13 in fact) according to the Swiss Système.
France finishes 27e with 21 points.
China obtains its first trophy. Russia and Georgia are decided between by the Système Buchholz (295 against 289,5).
