Olympia Snowe

Olympia Jean Snowe (born in 1947) is an American political woman, member of the Republican party and senator of the Maine to the Congrès of the United States since 1995.

A childhood struck by misfortune

Olympia Jean Bouchles was born the February 21st 1947 with Augusta, Maine, girl of George and Georgia Goranites Bouchles. George Bouchles was originating in Sparte in Greece.

Georgia Goranites Bouchles died of a cancer whereas Olympia has only eight years and George one year later of cardiac disorders.

Orphan, Olympia is high with the five other children of its uncle and his aunt with Auburn, Maine, and is separated from his/her own John brother. A few years later, his/her uncle itself is carried by the disease.

In 1969, Olympia Bouchles is graduate in political science of the Université of Maine. She marries then Peter Snowe, a republican congressman of the state.

In 1973, her husband Peter Snowe is killed in an car accident.

In 1974, 26 years old, it is elected with the room of the representatives of Maine to the seat which Peter Snowe occupied. She will be re-elected in 1976.

A national Career

In 1978, Olympia Snowe is elected with the Chambre of the Representatives of the United States to the vacant seat left by William Cohen, elected official with the Senate. It represents the district of Bangor and will sit at the Room until in 1994.

In February 1989, it marries John McKernan, governor of Maine and becomes the " First Lady" state.

In 1994, she is elected with the Sénat of the United States with 60% of the voices against the democratic Tom Andrews. She takes again the vacant seat left by the Democratic senator George Mitchell and who was formerly that of the democrat Edmund Muskie.

In 1998, with his/her elected colleague of Maine, Susan Collins, it votes against the Impeachment of Bill Clinton.

In 2000, it is re-elected with 69% of the voices against the democratic president of the senate of Maine, Mark Lawrence.

Member of several important commissions of the senate, it is called " The Big O" by George W. Bush.

In December 2005, with a rate of approval of 75% of the residents of Maine, it is the most popular sénatrice of the Congress (bearing SurveyUSA Survey on 600 residents of each state carried out from December 9th to 11th 2005. Margin of error of 4%).

The November 7th 2006, it is triumphantly re-elected with 74% of the voices compared with 21% for the democratic candidate Jean Hay Bright.
