The Olona (in dialect lombard Ulona or Urona ) is a river of Italy (104 km, 475 km ² of basin) which takes its source on the Legnone Mount, in the regional park Campo dei Fiori, beside Rasa di Varese, hamlet of Varèse. It is divided into many arms and is the affluent of the Lambro and the Po beside San Zenone in the Province of Pavia.
Its course crosses Varèse, the area of Seprio, Legnano, San Vittore Olona and Parabiago, the hamlet of San Lorenzo. With the height of Rho, the river is channeled to disappear with Pero, collecting water of the sewers under the roadway. Always under ground, it crosses the town of Milan. It reappears near Piazza delle Milizie where it passes under the Naviglio Grande.
Channeled, it arrives at the avenue Famagosta and there it is divided into several arms. The two principal ones pass under the Naviglio Pavese near Conca Fallata (Lambro Meridionale), then with Rozzano and the other communes on their courses for, then to throw itself in the Lambro. A third arm, which borrows the old principal course, leaves the basement by a resurgence to Lacchiarella, close to Casirate Olona and crosses the Province of Pavia, to the confluence of the Po, close to San Zenone Al Po: one speaks then about the Olona Inferiore .
The first denomination, Parco dei Mulini, result from the concentration of water mills in the zone concerned, as for example in San Vittore Olona where a competition of international race on foot takes place, the Five Mills. The second denomination suggested results from its site, about with semi-course of the river.
The zones which are implied in this project are the banks of the river, the wooded areas where the heathers, the agricultural land near the river push, i.e. the communes of Legnano, Canegrate, San Vittore Olona, Parabiago and Nerviano, more precisely the zone ranging between Parco Castello di Legnano and old Monastero Olivetano in Nerviano, today seat of the town hall.
The creation of this park aims at the safeguard of typical natural environment (flora and fauna), the defense of the agricultural activities and the recovery of river water. It is notorious that Olona became one of the most polluted rivers of Italy, this explains that the effort concentrates more particularly on the zone between Castellanza and Milan, that which will be urbanized in the new park.
A system of retaining tanks is being studied against the frequent floods in the zone concerned with the green surface.
