Olof Torén

Olof Torén is a naturalist and Pasteur Lutheran Swedish, born with Sätila (province of Västergötland) in 1718 and deceased with Näsinge (province of Bohuslän) the August 17th 1753.

After having studied with the University of Uppsala as from 1737, Torén becomes Pasteur in 1747 and takes part as chaplain of navy in two forwardings of the Swedish Compagnie of the Eastern Indies, the first bound for Java aboard the ship Hoppet , in 1748-1749, and the second bound for the India and of the China aboard the ship Götha Lejon , in 1750-1752. During this last voyage, Torén spends in particular five months to Surat and six months in the area of Canton.

The second voyage of Olof Torén was the occasion of a correspondence with the naturalist Carl von Linné. The notes of Torén which appear in it were object besides postume the publication in 1757, under the title In Ostindisk Resa til Suratte, China &c. från 1750 April 1. til 1752 Jun. 26. . They were then translated into German in 1765, French in 1771 and English in 1771.

Linné dedicated to Olof Torén the botanical kind Torenia L. of the family of the Scrophulariacées.
